Moment: Cole’s Walk

The Cost of Being Known

A Varsity Nights Moment

Cole Vanowen runs a tight program. He has to.

He came to Sierra Coast University as a freshman when the swim team was an afterthought — underfunded, under-recruited, the kind of program nobody chooses. Four years later he’s the captain of something worth choosing. That’s not luck. That’s discipline applied every single day, in and out of the water.

But discipline has a way of becoming a habit you can’t put down. And in this Moment, alone on the bluffs above Valle Mar, Cole lets himself think about the one thing that discipline has always been protecting.

It’s not about the swimming. It’s about what gets remembered.

A program can be built. A reputation can be earned. And both of them, Cole knows, can come apart over a single line — the kind of line that, once it’s said out loud, becomes the only thing anyone keeps.

He watches the freshmen move through the season without that weight. Luca especially. He doesn’t perform for anyone, doesn’t need to, and Cole can’t imagine what that’s like.

So he keeps it still. He calls it discipline.

He’s not sure that’s the right word anymore.

Cole’s Walk Moment is live now for Varsity Access and Captain’s Circle members. Step inside the captain’s head before the season forces his hand.
