What “Crossing the Line” is

Episode 8 ended with four people standing on the edge of something and none of them moving. This is the episode where the standing stops.

It opens on the best week Luca and Eli have had all season. Beach walks, easy nights, nothing performed. Read it as a reprieve and you’ll read the whole episode wrong. The good week is what causes everything that follows.

Eli asks for something he won’t remember asking for, and gets told no by the one person who has never told him no. The next morning Luca covers for him with a lie instead of silence. That’s new, and it costs something.

Then Eli leaves for a weekend in San Francisco, sits down with the friend he’s known since he was fourteen, and closes the door on the truth himself. Nobody makes him do it.

Which leaves Luca on campus alone on a Sunday, and Cole in an empty aquatic center, and four months of not crossing a room finally running out.

Elsewhere on the team, two freshmen have their first real conversation about what sex actually costs them, and a swimmer nobody was watching closes six inches that the captain has spent a whole season failing to close.

Why it’s called “Crossing the Line”

Last episode, nobody fell. Everybody leaned.

This one, somebody falls. He’s gone by morning, and the person he leaves behind never wakes up.
