What “Morning Practice” is
Eli comes back from San Francisco on Monday morning and finds the evidence sitting on the nightstand in daylight. Luca doesn’t hide it and doesn’t explain it. He gives Eli one chance to be the person in that bed instead, and Eli doesn’t take it.
An hour later Eli is at the wall between sets, and he works it out from across the pool. Not from a confession. From the way one person is looking at another. Cole sees him see it.
Cole spends the rest of the day inventing reasons to be standing wherever Luca is. A lineup. A travel question. Coach wants us in the water over break. Four separate approaches, and not one real question in any of them.
Monday evening, Luca mentions in passing that he has nowhere to be for two weeks. Nobody in the room hears what that is.
Then Eli crosses the room. He asks for the thing he has never once asked for, and he gets it, and he wakes up Tuesday morning not having moved all night and finally understands that the two things are not the same thing.
Tuesday night he says the name out loud. He gets an honest answer to every question he asks. Then Luca asks him the only question that matters, and the answer is right there, and he cannot get it out.
Elsewhere: the captain picks up a number he has had since November and, for the first time in any room with anyone, moves first. It works. That turns out to be the problem.
And three hundred miles north, someone else’s oldest friend is bringing a boy home to meet his mother, and says so on a phone call, and doesn’t know what he just did.
Why it’s called “Morning Practice”
Season 1 opened at a morning practice. It ends at one.
Practice is the thing you do over and over so that you can do it when it counts.
They have had four months of mornings. Every one of them has been practice.
Three people finally move this week. Two of them get exactly what they ask for.
The one who waited four months gets to the door about ten seconds late.
